Raking- the worst kind of chore for the chronic sinus sufferer

Sinus infections are awful! If you are prone to sinus infections and want to reduce them, beware of the outside fall chores!

Here’s what can happen when a person who is prone to sinusitis dutifully rakes up those leaves.

The scraping and raking of leaves stirs up dirt, dust, mold, and pollen into the air.

Your inhale those contaminates in through your nose.

The dirt, dust, mold, and pollen triggers allergy and asthma symptoms like swelling of nasal membranes.

When nasal membranes swell, it makes it hard for mucous to flow. When mucous can’t flow, contaminants are trapped in the sinuses, the bacteria flourishes and infection begins.

So, what can you do if you can’t delegate this job to anyone else? Cover your nose! Wear a NIOSH rated N95mask when raking leaves. And when you’re done, do a nasal sinus rinse. You might look silly, but you’ll be glad to be spending the holidays breathing clearly and sleeping soundly.

My name is Keri and I help Sinus Center-Idaho manage this website in order to help people learn about the experts that run Sinus Center – Idaho and to better understand ENT care. Because of this, I have learned a great deal about sinuses, including prevention and symptoms. My husband is prone to sinus infection, so I have some understanding of how painful and miserable it is to have infection ruin your quality of life. However, since he has heeded their advice, the frequency of his long, drawn-out infections has greatly reduced! Some of this advice is SO simple. And it saved our vacation this summer.

Our destination was McCall and we had the car fully loaded with food, luggage and paddle boards. We headed up Highway 55 very late in the day and we had allowed our 7 and 9 year old boys to play on some electronics. About an hour into the trip, our oldest son complained of a headache and stomach ache. Thinking he was simply nauseated from looking down, we pulled over and took a break with a walk for fresh air.

It didn’t help. His headache was getting worse and worse. Tylenol only brought minor relief. He said it was worse leaning forward. We finally realized he had a sinus infection. It’s is a horrible feeling when your child is sick and you can’t seem to make it better. Decongestants also only minimally decreased the pain. This was stressful. It was the weekend, we were not near our usual doctors, and we didn’t want to have to resort to antibiotics.

The next course of action was worked like magic. Nasal saline rinse. Thankfully we had an expert on hand: Daddy! One trip to the local grocery store and a little lesson on rinsing saved us from leaving the fun of Payette Lake early. The rinse brought our boy so much relief and we were all able to enjoy our time together in McCall with family. Sure, our son was still not at his full strength, but his pain was greatly relieved and a couple of days later (still rinsing morning and night) helped clear it out.

Not every infection is going to be as easily battled as this one was. If you or a loved one are prone to sinus infection and saline rinses aren’t helping, call (208) 433-9300. We care and we can help!

Rick Steinburg, PA-C, explains why your sinuses might be having a hard time through this late summer fire season and what may help.

“Smoke is made up of a mixture benzene formaldehyde, acrelein, tiny particles/debris, and other respiratory irritants. These particles can cause irrititation of your eyes, nose, sinuses, and respiratory tract. This particulate matter makes it difficult for your respiratory system to remove inhaled pollen and bacteria. Nasal saline can be helpful. Most importantly, protect yourself by being alert to public service announcements and limiting your exposure to smoke.”

Rick Steinburg, PA-C has been with Sinus Center – Idaho and Allergy Clinic-Idaho for 12 years. His dedication to patient care, love for helping people with allergies, and great sense of humor help make our office one of the best. He and his wife, Wendy, have five children and two grandchildren.

Q. Did you have any life-changing experiences that put you on the path that led you to be doing what you’re doing today?
For a long time, my brother was in and out of the emergency room monthly, because of allergies and asthma. When I graduated 24 years ago, I asked him what the doctors were doing for him because all he had was a rescue medicine. He had no preventative care and he had no help, so no wonder he was in the ER! I took over his care and worked with an immunologist. Now he is much better and doesn’t go to the ER.

Q. Do you have any personal goals you are working on personally?
For me right now, part of it’s keeping a balance in work, health, social, and emotional balance. You can tell when you get out of balance in any of those areas.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-468" src="http://sinuscenters.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/RickSteinburgPA-C-300x200.jpg" alt="Rick Steinburg, PA-C , has been helping patients find relief at Sinus Center - Idaho for over 12 years.
Q. What led you to this job?
So I was in Iowa and I was working with an Immunologist/Allergist half a week and and ENT group the other half of the week. On the ENT side we’d fix their structures, but sometimes membrane issues would still affect them. So I’d be able to help them again on the membrane side. It helped me appreciate there are two sides to this coin. You can have wonderful structure, but if you have sneezy, itchy, runny nose, watery eyes, swelling, coughing, wheezing, etc. It doesn’t help. You can’t just fix one. And vice versa, you can fix the membrane, but if the septum’s really deviated, all the treatment in the world won’t help. So, my wife wanted to move closer to family and the newspaper had an ad for and Allergy & ENT Physician Assistant in Boise. I said, ‘That’s me! Obvious they’re talking about me.’ That was in 2001.

Did you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you?
Dr. Boyajian. He’s one that has a great work ethic and is able to balance it out to spend time with and love his family. He is passionate about his work.

Q. You’ve mentioned that sometimes enjoy volunteering locally. What kind of volunteer work was your favorite or most memorable? Paint the Town Boise, Rake Up Boise, projects where we rehab parks or plant things as a family. We also like to help out families during the holidays.

Q. What comes easiest to you as a PA?
Helping people. It’s fun.

Q. Favorite weekend activity?
We’re dinner and a movie kids.

An antibiotic is a soluble substance derived from a mold or bacterium that inhibits the growth of other microorganisms.

The first antibiotic was Penicillin, discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1929, but it was not until World War II that the effectiveness of antibiotics was acknowledged, and large-scale fermentation processes were developed for their production.

Acute sinusitis is one of many medical disorders that can be caused by a bacterial infection. However, it is important to remember that colds (viral infections), allergies, and environmental irritants, which are more common than bacterial sinusitis, can also cause sinus problems. Antibiotics are effective only against sinus infections caused by a bacterial infection.

The following symptoms may indicate the presence of a bacterial infection in your sinuses:

Pain in your cheeks or upper back teeth

A lot of bright yellow or green drainage from your nose for more than 10 days

No relief from decongestants, and/or

Symptoms that get worse instead of better after your cold is gone.

Most patients with a clinical diagnosis of acute sinusitis caused by a bacterial infection improve without antibiotic treatment. Physicians will initially offer appropriate doses of analgesics (pain-relievers), antipyretics (fever reducers), and decongestants. However if symptoms persist, antibiotics may also be added to treat the sinus infection.

Antibiotic Treatment For Sinusitis

Antibiotics are labeled as narrow-spectrum drugs when they work against only a few types of bacteria. On the other hand, broad-spectrum antibiotics are more effective by attacking a wide range of bacteria, but are more likely to promote antibiotic resistance. For that reason, your ear, nose, and throat specialist (ENT) will most likely prescribe narrow-spectrum antibiotics, which often cost less. He/she may recommend broad-spectrum antibiotics for infections that do not respond to treatment with narrow-spectrum drugs.
